CONVERGENCE

Hemp and cotton were delicately hand-woven into a yarn base — into an epic 20+ foot, three-dimensional textile sculpture.

The installation was curated by kvprojects and art handled by the SILVERMAN Building team.

Defined by two intersecting planes, CONVERGENCE graces the eyes of visitors at the entrance to the double-height lobby of The Hendrix. Strategically installed between a twist in the master staircase and a 20-foot tall window wall, the intricate weave of the artwork adds a gentle air to the space, its fringed ends hovering just over the graphite floor.

As viewers move up and down the staircase or walk outside, past the glass walls encasing the lobby, the forms of the textile morph and shift.

Engaging with the environment and interior architecture set forth by K&Co, the artist drew on the complementary vibe, colors and curatorial theme of “Untethered Nostalgia” for multiple first sketches and warping plans. Once the plan was set, the artist worked with hand-dyed natural fibers until the desired colors were reached. Finally, the warp, composed of hundreds of fine hemp threads, was meticulously set up on a handloom.

It took a total of nine months, each woven yard checked off like a mark on a football field, until the final thread was cut.

After the artist patiently brought her vision to life, the SILVERMAN team prepared an “X” frame for the ceiling, and suspended the structure by threads. A matching base was custom-welded for the floor, to accentuate the texture and pattern from below with theatrical lighting.

During the day, CONVERGENCE receives a flow of natural light from the large windows: it is on constant display. The depth and dimension of the artwork are grand in its presence, yet it remains so elegant and demure — almost invisible to a busy eye…The artist encourages the viewer to rest in a serene and thought-provoking moment, amidst the bustle and movement of daily life outside. A dialogue… or just a pause for a moment of beauty, of lightness, of play.
